iGEM’s almost unbelievable growth is easily seen by the dramatic increase in teams and countries that now participate in this international competition. From five teams from the U.S. in 2004 to over 200 in 2012, iGEM has reached out to all corners of the world (though Africa still needs some iGEM outreach).
Year 2012
Diversity is brought to iGEM through the teams it hosts and also through the projects it presents. As of 2012, there are eight main tracks that a team can adopt as the overarching theme of their project. This allows for a clear picture of what topics are currently popular and what topics have room for more growth.
Year 2011
Over the years of iGem's illustrious career there has been general growth in each project category. The only tracks somewhat stagnant in terms of growth are software tools and information processing. So to all those computer geniuses out there join iGEM and contribute something great!

In 2004 five teams came together at the Massachusetts Institution of Technology to join in competition that would later set the stage for great innovations in science. This competition came to be known as iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machines). IGEM is now a hub for teams and universities from around the world to meet and share their ideas on how to solve the world’s problems, to improve outdated methods, and to create something completely new through science. Through this competition some winning and novel ideas have come into existence.
