The TU Munich iGEM Team engineers ''Saccharomyces cerevisiae'', also known as baker's yeast, in order to contribute to a new generation of functional foods with nutritionally valuable ingredients. More specifically, the team currently designs and produces BioBricks to introduce the metabolic pathways for the substances Xanthohumol (anticancerogenic), Limonene (flavor of lime), Caffeine (CNS stimulant) and the protein Thaumatin (sweetener, E957). To achieve this goal the team adapts a yeast shuttle vector (pYES2), uses a yeast integration vector for stable transfections and creates and characterizes constitutive, alcohol- and light-inducible promoter systems.
