From July, 23rd to 25th our team went to Munich to visit the CAS (Center for Advanced Studies) Conference for Synthetic Biology. There we heard many interesting talks for example from Jay Keasling about fuel making bacteria or about logical gates from Brynne Stanton.

Our university also had a speaker, Lotte Søgaard-Andersen showed possibilities to find a module for regulation of cell polarity. On the second day we had a dinner with all attendees of iGEM teams. Here we had the first opportunity to better get to know participants not only from Germany but also from London and Wageningen. The conference offered much time to communicate with other iGEM teams and to learn about their experiences and the progress of their projects.

Legoland for scientists - Goettingen

“Legoland for scientists”. Information evening for synthetic biology, Göttingen At the information evening on the 7th of September at Georg-August-University of Göttingen our instructor Prof. Michael Bölker gave a talk about chances and possibilities of synthetic biology. Two other speakers, Sascha Karberg and Dr. Anna Deplazes Zemp complemented the information by a critical view and ethical problems.

Afterwards a stage discussion with the three speakers and a representative of a biotech seed company “KWS” was set up. Thank to well-prepared questions the audience could enjoy a critical and informative argument.

German teams information day

On the 25th of August most German teams organized the iGEM-Day of action. Our team also participated, placing an information stand on Elisabeth-Blochmann-Platz in Marburg. Many people visited our stand where we explained the meaning of synthetic biology, talked about iGEM and about our project “The Recombinator”. To support our explanations we spread booklets about biotechnology, SYNMICRO-info sheets and [flyer] about our project. We also offered a competition with simple questions in synthetic biology.

Biotechnology 2020Plus - Berlin

In 2010 the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has started a strategy process “Biotechnology 2020+”. This initiative promotes the collaboration of the natural scientists with the engineers in research and development of innovative products and technological processes. The 3rd Annual Congress of “Biotechnology 2020+” was held in Berlin on June 28, 2012. About 200 experts from science, politics and industry as well as the participants of 11 German iGEM teams were invited to this meeting. The program for the day included speeches, panel discussions and workshops. Two exhibition areas, one presenting the current projects of the renowned German research companies, and the second one showing the iGEM-posters, offered an ideal opportunity for the exchange of innovative ideas. The iGEM - participants met for the first time together to discuss the projects and their implementation. In a closed session the iGEM teams discussed how the iGEM competition could contribute to social acceptance of the Synthetic Biology. It was decided to organise the Germany-wide iGEM information day to bring citizens and students closer to the issues of Biotechnology, Synthetic Biology and the iGEM competition. To ensure a simple communication it has been determined to found the iGEM Germany group on facebook. This group serves the iGEM participants as a platform for exchange of the information and ideas.
