Uppsala university, founded in year 1477, is the oldest institution of higher learning in Scandinavia. Today, it is a leading research university with education and advanced research in areas ranging from humanities to particle physics. Uppsala university has had a especially strong presence in biomedicine and biotechnology for as long as those areas have existed. The city of Uppsala, 40 minutes north from Stockholm, is a very academic middle-sized city strongly shaped by the history of the university.

- Three units of measurement are named for Uppsala scientists: the (Anders) Celsius, the (Anders) Ångström and the (The) Svedberg.
- Eight Nobel laureates have been associated with Uppsala university, including the inventors of the ultracentrifuge and the protein electrophoresis.
- The students are organized in 13 fraternities, or nations as we call them, founded in the 17 century. They provide the student population with housing, grants, sports activites, choirs, orchestras, pubs, clubs and much more. 400 years later, enrollment is still at nearly a hundred percent.
