Would any of your project ideas raise safety issues in terms of researcher, public or environmental safety?
Our project deals in most part with no problematic parts in terms of safety: The quorun sense substances, as far as we know, have effects only in E. coli, in addition, they are confinated on a device that isolates them, so, at this part, our project doesn't have any serious issue with biosafety to the public, researchers or enviroment.
Do any of the new BioBrick parts (or devices) that you made this year raise any safety issues?
We purposed a biobrick using the enzime Cre recombinase . Actually, the Cre recombinase isn't a threat by itself, but we can imagine its action can increase some risks. Since it's a recombination enzime, its action raises the probability of mutations and unpredictable recombinations into the bacteria. At first, it is only potential because of the restriction to lox sites, what avoids the most part of possible recombinations, but, in some extreme unpredictable scenario of unknown mutation effects,a good first step in the investigation would be checking the action of Cre recombinase .
=== Is there a local biosafety group, committee, or review board at your institution?
If yes, what does your local biosafety group think about your project? ===
There is biosafety groups in our institution, although There’s no special concern about the safety of our project. The use of safety standard protocols makes sure that any potential danger is minimized at its lowest level.
Do you have any other ideas how to deal with safety issues that could be useful for future iGEM competitions? How could parts, devices and systems be made even safer through biosafety engineering?
The use of specific bar code DNA’s and other kind of specific and other artificial synthetic marks could make easy to discover possible leaks or contaminations in the enviroment .
