For the researcher safety, our members are trained by all the safety regulations before we start the experiments. Based on our experimental design, all facilities in the laboratory are performed in Biosafety Level 2 and the materials we use are E.coli Top 10, Salmonella typhimurium VNP, Melanoma B16F10 and the laboratory mice.  Since the Salmonella Typhimurium VNP is infectious, we take some measures to ensure the safety of our team members when we conduct the experiments with the bacteria.  During all the experiments, all the instructions are posted and the workers are requested to wear the nitrile gloves, lab coats and masksMoreover, a room is separated for the experiments and the bacteria are kept in a special placeNormal safety protocols are observed for experimental proceduresExcept for those normal procedures that the team can deal with on a daily basis, we will also use the ultraviolet light in our experiments, so we arrange different people to do this work to reduce the average time each member contacting with itAs for the public and environment safety, we always keep the products in the cell cultures to avoid their spread to the outside and check their conditions regularlyAt the same time, we also dispose those products according to the protocols.

On the afternoon of 18th September, the volunteers of our iGEM team gave a lecture at Jinling High School in downtown Nanjing.  We introduced the basic knowledge of molecular and synthetic biology to the students, and helped them comprehend how to modify Salmonella Typhimurium through molecular experiments to increase their ability of tumor targeting and decrease their toxicity in order to be suitable for clinical treatmentsWe later presented iGEM High School Division part which they showed great interest in.  We encouraged them to take part in the division and would like to help them with all our effortsAfter the lecture, we had a great time talking with the studentsThey were curious about the biology world and asked many questions related to our work.

<br/>  NO, none of the new BioBrick parts we made would raise any significant safety issues since all the genes we use commonly exist in E.coli Top 10 and Salmonella Typhimurium VNP. Although the modified bacteria have some advantages compared with the wild type, their abilities are only enhanced in terms of tumor targetingTherefore it's still safe for us to use and manipulate the bacteria.  Given that we always keep the bacteria in the cell cultures, there is no chance for them to contact with the outside so it's harmless for the environment.

They knew our work quite well because we had cooperation with the iGEM team of SEU during the summer vacationWe mainly introduced some characteristics of bacteria therapy from other normal therapies like high colonization and capability of carrying multiple exogenous genes of bacteria.  During the seminar, they raised many valuable questions and offered many suggestions on our experiment methods.  We further discussed on the safety problems of bacteria therapy and came up with some ideas trying to solve them.

<br/>  Yes, our team is supported by the Department of Life Science, Nanjing University.  So we are under all the Department's safety regulations.  Evaluating the experiments process in terms of safety, the department always reminds our team to put the safety in priority and arrange some experienced research assistants to help us.

  In terms of the safety issues, once the synthetic products have the chance to be commercial products, we should take the harmony between synthetic and natural products into consideration and find an appropriate place for the synthetic productsMost importantly, we should establish some particular protocols for these products which are created by human using synthetic biology techniques.  <br/>

Lecture in Jinling High School
On the afternoon of 18th September, the volunteers of our iGEM team gave a lecture at Jinling High School in downtown Nanjing. We introduced the basic knowledge of molecular and synthetic biology to the students, and helped them comprehend how to modify Salmonella Typhimurium through molecular experiments to increase their ability of tumor targeting and decrease their toxicity in order to be suitable for clinical treatments. We later presented iGEM High School Division part which they showed great interest in. We encouraged them to take part in the division and would like to help them with all our efforts. After the lecture, we had a great time talking with the students. They were curious about the biology world and asked many questions related to our work.

During the seminar, they raised many valuable questions and offered many suggestions on our experiment methods. We further discussed on the safety problems of bacteria therapy and came up with some ideas trying to solve them.

We introduced the advantages for VNP20009, the bacteria we used, to be applied in bacteria treatment and the detailed method to optimize the bacteria, which is to screen auxotrophic strains and transfect anaerobic promoters into the bacteria to enhance their efficiency of tumor targeting and killing cancer cells. In the end of our lecture, we made our outlook on the future of tumor targeting therapy with bacteria. The professors gave high praises on our work and offered many constructive comments.
