Movie Making

"Wissen+Konzepte", a scientific online magazine, contacted us via facebook. They asked us if we are interested in making a film about our team and our project. Of course we were really enthusiastic about this proposal. Consequently two nice ladies of the editorial staff of "Wissen+Konzepte" visited us on 10th of September. They filmed a lot of scenes.

First they took many pictures of our materials in the lab like for example petri dishes or yeast-medium. They also shot scences in the lab when doing a SDS-Page. Afterwards someone of our team explained previous to the camera our project. Especially the principles of cloning and the use of plasmids were explained by a comparison with a bus. The transfered genes stand for the passengers. The third big scene was shot with another participant of our team. He talked about the public opinion about our project, the activities made by us in the context of "Human Practice" and about the Germany-wide Action Day. Besides he mentioned that we chose a topic that is rather controversial in Germany, but that the response to our work is mainly very positive. The next scene was an interview with Prof. Dr. Skerra who also talked about iGEM and Synthetic Biology. Last but not least the day ended with a scene in a beer garden.

All in all it was a lot of fun to make this movie!! The movie will represent our project in rather easy way to open it to a greater public. That is the concept of Wissen+Konzepte.

We are sorry that we can't show you this film here, but it is still in the postproduction.

Background about Wissen+Konzepte

Wissen+Konzepte is an online magazine which summarizes new scientific approaches and the people behind it. So they do not only explain what is done, but also who does it and why. Normally they are doing Corporate Publishing, for scientists.

One of the filmcrew members studied at the TUM too, that was a big advantage.

Own "Production"

This film was designed to explain within one minute why we chose yeast and what represents bavarian culture. Of course it is a bit exaggerated, but not everything in life hast to be completly serious. And who does not like the "Oktoberfest"? We just wanted to show where we come from.

The movie was made by our photographer and shows the following scences:

  • The Oktoberfest- Bavarian Beer Culture
  • Short description of our SynBio Beer and mentioning of your pTUM100 plasmid
  • Showing of our ingredients
    • "These are Limonene (limeflavor), Xanthohumol (anticancerogenic), Thaumatin (sweeter) and Caffeine (stimulant)."
  • Mentioning of our promoters and explainig why they are neccessary for our project.
  • Pan shot of our beer bottles
