Human Outreach

Human Outreach

Our aim in Human Outreach was to spread our word among a broad audience. We invested a lot of time and effort but we have been rewarded with many opportunities. Frank Theys is making a documentary about us and a few other laboratories. We were invited to discuss our project at the Life Symposium. We educated children at the Floriade and at the Nacht van de Kunst & Wetenschap. We discussed and explained our project at Llowlab, part of Lowlands, to (young) adults with many different backgrounds. So these past few months many interesting, critical and curious people crossed our path and we have been delighted to educate them and discuss our project with them.

Documentary with Frank Theys

Frank Theys makes a documentary about us and a few other labs which will be broadcasted in several countries.

Floriade The World Horticultural Expo 2012

Floriade is a World Horticultural Exposition. World expositions are major international exhibitions that have been taking place across the world since 1851. They offer countries the opportunity to showcase their economic, social, cultural and technical developments. An expo often leaves behind it a legacy building, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Atomium in Brussels and the Euromast after the 1960 edition of Floriade.

Nacht van de Kunst&Wetenschap

Nacht van de Kunst en Wetenschap means Night of Art & Science. It was held in Groningen. We were invited as one of the Llowlab partners and it was our first experience in educating the public about Synthetic Biology.

Life Symposium

The 14th of May the Life Symposium took place, organized by Life the study association of Life, Science & Technology of the TU Delft. They invited us to talk about our project. Mark Weijers and Marcel Langelaan represented our team there and introduced our project to a high-minded audience. Many 'things to think about' came up when the visitors let their thoughts go over our project. //////Page 25 is about our performance at the life symposium http://www.lifesciencesymposium.nl/img/lss2012_final_report.pdf

LowLands 2012 - LLowlab Fasten Your Future

We explained, presented and discussed our project 3 days, 8 hours non stop to a very divers audience. Llowlab is the sustainable platform in a pond at Lowlands where innovative and sustainable projects or products get a chance to present themselves to the public. Scientist and inventors can reduce the gap between science and society. All the projects were explained by people with the help of t-shirts with an illustration and not explained by 'just' a poster. This gave a very nice interaction and a lot of room for questions. The biggest compliment we got that this way of explaining should have been done at high school because now it made sense.
This year 20.000 people visited Llowlab and audience was very broad but one thing they had all in common was that all of them were very interested. All parts of our project came together at Llowlab, professors and biologists with very critical questions about the labwork and the biology, African people who were very interested in the potential for Africa and people from Green Peace with questions about the ethics.
