We wanted to evaluate the general public’s impressions of synthetic biology. A significant number of Spark visitors have a limited understanding of synthetic biology and feel genetic engineering will be useful into the future. Although feedback for genetic engineering in the future was generally positive, the majority of respondents would only give conditional support to commercial enterprise in genetic engineering. This highlights the responsibility shouldered by iGEM teams; we must take a proactive approach to ethical concerns surrounding the deployment of syn bio so that the public will be supportive of these technologies. <tr><td class='diff-marker'>-</td><td style="background: #ffa; color:black; font-size: smaller;"><div><p><del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">At one of the Telus Spark Adult Only Nights our </del>team conducted a synthetic biology survey. <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">The purpose of this survey was </del>to evaluate the general public’s <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">knowledge and thoughts on </del>synthetic biology. <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"> Our results showed that a large amount </del>of <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">the general public feels like they </del>have <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">at least some </del>understanding of synthetic biology and <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">that they </del>feel genetic engineering will be useful <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">in </del>the future. <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline"> This is important because, </del>for <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">new advances in biology to be accepted </del>in the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">general public</del>, <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">there needs to be understanding and </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">knowledge that the advancement can be useful. With this survey we also found that </del>support <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">of </del>genetic engineering <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">companies would be dependent on </del>the ethical <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">integrity of </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">company. This shows the importance </del>of <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">genetic engineering companies keeping a good standing with </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">general </del>public<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">. Below is some graphical representations </del>of <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">the answers to </del>our survey<del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">.</del></div></td><td class='diff-marker'>+</td><td style="background: #cfc; color:black; font-size: smaller;"><div><p><ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Our </ins>team conducted a synthetic biology survey <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">during one of the bacteria art workshops on Adult's Night at the Spark</ins>. <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">We wanted </ins>to evaluate the general public’s <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">impressions of </ins>synthetic biology. <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">A significant number </ins>of <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Spark visitors </ins>have <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">a limited </ins>understanding of synthetic biology and feel genetic engineering will be useful <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">into </ins>the future. <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">Although feedback </ins>for <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">genetic engineering </ins>in the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">future was generally positive</ins>, the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">majority of respondents would only give condition </ins>support <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">to commercial enterprise in </ins>genetic engineering<ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">. This highlights </ins>the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">responsibility shouldered by iGEM teams; we must take a proactive approach to </ins>ethical <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">concerns surrounding </ins>the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">deployment </ins>of <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">syn bio so that </ins>the public <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">will be supportive </ins>of <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">these technologies.
