Monique Freitas | Boston University '13

Monique is studying abroad at BU and majoring in Biotechnology. She couldn`t think of a better way to enjoy her summer in Boston than joining IGEM BU team! Besides Science and research her passions are pistachio ice cream, long late night conversations and Dave Matthews Band.

Shawn Jin | Boston University '15

Shawn is a rising sophomore studying human physiology as part of the college of health and rehabilitation. Aside from spending time in the lab, he enjoys reading, watching tv and playing video games. During school he is part of the BU Club Fencing team as a foilist.

Advisers and Mentors

Traci Haddock | Team Advisor

Traci is a postdoctoral research associate in the Densmore laboratory at Boston University. Traci received her PhD in Molecular Biology with a concentration in Microbiology from the University of Rhode Island in December of 2010 and joined the Densmore lab in January of 2011. She has been the major adviser for BU's iGEM team this summer. Her nerdy hobby is collecting X-Men comic books and her favorite band is U2.

Evan Appleton | Team Mentor on Characterization

Evan is a graduate research assistant in the Densmore laboratory at Boston University. Evan received a BS in Biomedical Engineering and MS in Bioinformatics at BU ('10,'12) and is currently a PhD candidate in the Bioinformatics program. He has been providing experimental and computational mentoring to the students this summer. During his free time, he enjoys basketball, movies, live music and travelling.

Swati Banerjee Carr | Team Mentor on Wet Lab Protocols

Swati is a 4th year PhD student in the Densmore lab. She did her MS in Microbial Genetics from the University of Rhode Island in 2009 before which she divided her time between breeding plants and fruit flies for various research labs in her school. When Swati is not in lab, she is in the kitchen making complicated meals which she posts on her food blog The Whistling Pressure Cooker.

Sonya Iverson | Team Mentor on Wet Lab Protocols

Sonya is a graduate student in the biological side of the Densmore lab. She received B.S. in Biotechnology from Montana State University in 2007 and worked as a technician and lab manager in a mouse transgenic lab before coming to BU. This is the first year she's been an iGEM mentor and has primarily been involved in teaching molecular biology methods and troubleshooting. Sonya spends her free time slacklining along the river and working on web design projects.
