Requirements for Participation in iGEM 2012

Below is a list of requirements for participating in iGEM 2012. Note that this list is currently in DRAFT form and is subject to change.

  1. Team Composition:
    • An iGEM team must consist primarily of undergraduate students at an accredited college or university. The team must be supervised by at least two instructors one of whom must be a faculty member. Graduate students, postdocs, and others are welcome as team advisors.
  2. Team Structure:
    • The structure of iGEM teams is flexible. Several schools may combine to form a team and a school may have several teams. However, cross-region teams may be difficult to coordinate and are not highly encouraged.
  3. Participation Fees:
    • The following fees are associated with participating in the iGEM 2012 collegiate competition:
      1. Team Registration Fee (due: March 31, 2012),
      2. Regional Jamboree Attendance Fees (due: August 2012),
      3. World Championship Jamboree Attendance Fees (due: October 2012).
  4. Project Documentation:
    • The team's project must be documented on the iGEM Wiki, the parts used in their project must be documented in the Registry online.
      • Wiki: You have the freedom to be creative, but a few specific rules apply. See the wiki requirements.
      • Data Page: Your Wiki must include one page that shows:
        • A simple illustration of how the device works and where the Parts function in the system and
        • Links to the Registry for the parts/ constructs for which you have produced data.

      Do not expect the judges to look for data on other pages in your Wiki. See the Sample Data page.

  5. Part Submission:
    • Teams are required to provide their parts to the Registry as standard biological parts in the standard BioBrick shipping plasmid (pSB1C3). See the DNA submission page for more details. Be sure you understand the requirements before submitting your DNA by the deadline.
  6. Software:
    • If your team is participating in the software tools track, you must make tools for use with standard BioBrick parts. Software tools must be available as open source projects on the iGEM servers. See more information on the Software Tools page.
  7. Attribution:
    • The description of each project must clearly attribute work done by the Students and distinguish it from work done by others, including the host labs, Advisors, Instructors, technicians, sponsors, professional website designers/ artists, and commercial services.
  8. Safety:
    • Teams are required to answer the Safety questions on their team Safety Wiki page. See the Safety page for the list of questions.
  9. Project Presentation:
    • All team members are required to attend their Regional Jamboree in October 2012. Each team will give a 20 minute presentation and present a poster of their project. Oral and poster presentations must be given by the students.
  10. Positive Contribution:
    • All participants are required to work hard to build positive contributions to society and have lots of fun!
